And because interstate travel is often the fastest way to get from city to city and state to state, many drivers are susceptible to highway hypnosis around the holidays due to the monotony of those stretches of road.

But because many people travel long distances by car to reach family and friends on Thanksgiving, they try to knock out those drives in a single day, which can be dangerous.
More people on the road
In 2022, around 49 million people traveled by car to reach their Thanksgiving destinations, according to AAA. Comparatively, only around 4.5 million traveled by plane to see family and friends for the holiday. The National Safety Council estimated that more than 500 people were likely to die in car accidents during the Thanksgiving holiday period in 2022.
Typically, driving on the interstate is actually safer than driving on rural roads and urban streets. That’s because despite having higher speed limits, interstates have safety features like lights, wide lanes, median dividers, and no intersections. However, some interstates are notoriously dangerous, especially during peak traffic like morning and evening commutes and holiday travel. Interstate 40, which passes directly through Nashville, is one of those interstates. In 2020, it ranked as the third-deadliest interstate in the nation according to Tennessee Town & City and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
